Design details
When laid flat, the shape of the Inklines long squint cape is unexpected.
Knitwear designer Niela Nell Kalra often manipulates flat – and apparently simple – shapes to create drape and a fit that is personal to each wearer.
The choice of yarn and the fabric construction contribute greatly to the overall look and feel of the finished, knitted cape. Natural drape and sheen given by the extra-fine merino yarn is combined with the weight of double-faced jacquard knit (without being overly heavy, this allows the cape to sit just right).

Manufacture
We are committed to sustaining and being part of UK knitwear manufacturing – and Shetland’s place in this.
- We design Nielanell knitwear in our Hoswick studio, with initial concepts carefully translated into the flat panels needed to make up each piece.
- Currently, for this garment, we are working with specialist knitters in Mainland UK to make these panels.
- The garment itself is made in Shetland. Our in-house team in Hoswick transforms the flat panels into a wearable piece of knitwear using linking (a skilled knitting process) and hand-finishing.
- Our knitwear is made in very small batches, slowly. Each piece of Nielanell knitwear can take approximately 12-16 weeks (often longer) from weighing out the yarn needed in our studio to the garment being ready to wear.

Inspiration and design process: drawing time in knitwear
The Inklines textile design is taken from an ink drawing of time, inspired by a visit to the archaeological excavations at Ness of Brodgar, Orkney.
Working out the interaction between pattern and garment shape, with a card viewer stuck onto the screen!
A simple, inked 'timeline' has been developed to create a pattern of overlapping shapes and negative space—a response to the term deep time.
