HISTORY ASPECTS:
The Bristol F.2B Fighter was one of the most successful two-seat combat aircraft of the First World War, proving that a well-designed reconnaissance aircraft could also be a formidable fighter. Powered by a Rolls-Royce Falcon engine, the “Brisfit” combined speed, agility, and strong armament, with a synchronized forward-firing machine gun for the pilot and a flexible rear gun for the observer. Its performance allowed it to challenge single-seat fighters while still carrying out vital reconnaissance, artillery spotting, and ground-attack duties over the Western Front.
Aircraft A6/C4636, known as “Devil-in-the-Dusk,” served with No. 39 Squadron of the Royal Flying Corps, later the Royal Air Force, during intense air operations over France and Belgium. No. 39 Squadron was heavily engaged in photographic reconnaissance and tactical support missions, flying deep over enemy lines to gather intelligence that was crucial for planning Allied offensives. Crews flying the Bristol F.2B often encountered German fighters such as the Albatros and Fokker types, leading to fierce aerial engagements as they defended themselves while attempting to complete their assignments.
The Bristol F.2B saw extensive service during the major conflicts of the First World War, including operations connected to the Battles of Arras, Cambrai, and the final Allied offensives that pushed German forces back in the closing months of the war. Aircraft like “Devil-in-the-Dusk” were part of a new era of air warfare, where aerial reconnaissance and air superiority became essential components of battlefield success. The F.2B’s ability to survive in hostile airspace while performing multiple roles earned it the respect of both Allied and enemy pilots.
This 1:48 scale model captures the character of one of World War I’s most versatile combat aircraft, offering collectors a detailed tribute to the daring crews who flew reconnaissance and combat missions over the Western Front.
