- Omani Somt Fine Silver Pectoral Necklace circa 1900-1950
- Approx. 32" long
- Diameter of Centerpiece : 4"
- Material: Silver #92.5 Sterling Silver with authentic Maria Theresa Thalers.
- From the Collection of Lois Sherr Dubin and illustrated on page 98 in Lois's magnificent book The History of Beads: From 30,000 B.C. to the Present (Abrams, 1987; reissued in paperback in 2004 and updated in 2009 as The History of Beads: From 100,000 to the Present), a beloved classic study and reference on the subject that has been published in five languages.
- Omani Tribal Silver was still possible to find in the markets of Muscat, Nizwa, Ibri, Sur or Salalah or from still working silversmiths more remote mountain villages through the 1960's-70's. Sadly, that is no longer possible. True, authentic pieces are found only in private collections and/or museums throughout the world.
- Omani silver is prized amongst Tribal Jewelry Collectors for several reasons. Firstly, it is relatively rare. Oman has never had a large population and until the 1980's the country was virtually closed off to foreign influence, trade and tourism.
- Secondly, the older pieces were made from very high quality silver obtained not in Oman (trace amounts available there only) but from the melting down of Maria Theresa Dollars, commonly referred to as Thalers. Maria Theresa Thalers have been struck in Austria since the reign of Empress Maria Theresa of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The Empress died in 1780 and since that time, all Thalers that were subsequently struck were minted with that date regardless of the actual year that they were produced. The coins achieved such a level of trust for their silver content (which is 83.3% silver) in the Middle East that neither the design not the date was varied. For more than 200 years the coins were used as an international currency among the Tribes and the States of the Middle East-especially Oman, in much the same was as the Spanish dollar was used as an international currency at the time elsewhere. The Thalers were used to complete most important transactions locally and were also given as dowries. They were also an important source of silver and were melted locally for jewelry.
- Thirdly, Omani silversmiths, located in towns and hence not part of the Nomadic Tribal Culture they served were known for their high level of workmanship.
- Finally, because all Omani silver jewelry tended to be symbolic of the unity and special bonds within a family unit, it was rare that pieces were ever sold or passed down. When no longer used or the owner passed away, they would be melted down and re-fashioned in to new jewelry.
- 'Somt' is the widely used name for an Omani necklace which has a medallion as its centerpiece. The intricacy of the work on these medallions is said to be amongst the finest you will see on any piece of Bedouin Jewelry. The basic design is always the same and consists of a six petal flower and an awe inspiring pattern of concentric circles radiating outward.
- This Omani necklace, which would have represented a large portion of a bride's dowry comprises a round silver sunburst disk decorated with niello work, eight silver Maria Theresa thaler coins dated 1780 and twenty seven silver double barrel-shaped beads. Two acacia thorns inset into their own worked silver holders add to the interest and rarity of this necklace. Importantly, all elements have wear and patina demonstrating their age and the silver has the wonderful buttery feel of high grade old silver.
- The engraved medallions possibly represent "The Rayed Sun" frequently referred to in the Holy Koran.
- The Marriyah necklace (as it is referred to) would originally have been made for the owner to wear for her marriage ceremony and thereafter on special occasions.
- Provenance: from the Collection of Lois Sherr Dubin.
- Lois Sherr Dubin wrote The History of Beads: From 30,000 B.C. to the Present (Abrams, 1987; reissued in paperback in 2004 and updated in 2009 as The History of Beads: From 100,000 to the Present), a beloved classic study and reference on the subject that has been published in five languages. Scholar, Researcher and Collector, Lois Sherr Dubin is also the world renowned author of several authoritative books on Native American jewelry and beadwork, and co-curator of numerous museum exhibitions including Totems to Turquoise: Native North American Jewelry Arts of the Northwest and Southwest; Glittering World: Navajo Jewelry of the Yazzie Family and Floral Journey: Native North American Beadwork.
- On a personal note, Ms. Dubin's magnificent book The History of Beads: From 30,000 B.C. to the Present was one of the most important inspirations in the early days of Beads of Paradise NYC. When we first opened in the East Village 3 decades ago, Ms. Dubin's book was always on our sales counter as the authoritative guide to understanding the vast array and complexities of Cultural Beads and Adornments. To many bead lovers and admirers, this was our "Bible", and Ms. Dubin's Bead Timeline Map was hung prominently in the shop. Customers would line up in front of the Timeline, trace the origins of beads they were buying, beads they would like to order, or just plain beads they were dreaming of having someday.
- To this day, whenever a customer asks for a reference guide, or just a book dealing with beads, Ms. Dubin's book is still the top of our recommendations.

Great dog balls at a great price
Size: Medium
The balls are a favorite for my dog. I could have done without the hole through the middle because I don't do treats in balls anyway. My dog loves balls for their own merit. I needed replacement balls for my Nerf Dog Ball launcher. It seems the originals have disappeared from the market. I took a chance because the price is right and this Chuck-it ball works very well so we're liking this ball a lot. So far my Dachsund, who can destroy a tennis ball (the kind they are selling as Nerf Dog replacements) in 3 minutes has not done any damage to this one so that's a win. I recommend this as a much better ball than the fuzzy tennis balls. I like the colors too since many dog toys are green (which gets lost in the lawn, etc.) or red (even though dogs have red/green color blindness. Blue and orange are good and pretty easy to find. I liked these well enough that this set was my second purchase so I will have spares in case the others are lost.

My Baby loves his new baby!
Size: Medium, Size: Medium
Finally! A ball my 107 lb. pitty/pointer mix can’t destroy. He has torn up every single “indestructible” toy in a day or so until now. He peels fabric and fur off non-rubber toys. He is a 4-legged shredder. I’ve added pictures of him for a size reference of my dog versus this product. I know I had wanted that when shopping for this item.
This ball is now his beloved “baby.” He goes absolutely insane looking for it, chewing it, chasing it, and even sleeping with it. He won’t rest unless he knows exactly where it is. It is his only toy, and he is good with that. After getting this home, I tried giving him other choices, but he won’t touch them.
I was worried that he would rip it apart by putting his teeth in the holes, but so far, not a scratch. It is soft enough to collapse just enough to keep it from cracking when his jaws crush it but not so soft that he can rip it to sheds. The holes are large enough to prevent a suction or vacuum effect on his tongue or mouth. For his size jaws, it is a perfect fit. Other dogs might have problems with suction or be able to get their teeth in those holes and rip it apart. Who knows?
The older version of the Chuckit squeaky ball was his favorite for the year and a half he had it, but the way they make them now, he peels off the orange triangle in hours flat, the squeaker falls out (choking hazard), and then he rips it apart.
I’m going to stock up on these. I can’t imagine how crazy he will be if they ever stop production or change the materials.

Lightweight Balls
Color: A.Orange+Blue+Green
lightweight but solid. Unfortunately, I can't bring to dog park for my dog to play with as the larger dogs will destroy them. Not for dogs that chew through everything.
